Tasmania Police Sounds Alarm on Cryptocurrency ATM Scam Losses

Share

Tasmania Police is warning citizens about an alarming rise in cryptocurrency ATM scams that have resulted in over $1.5 million in losses for local victims. The investigation found that between January and March, scammers targeted individuals with romance, investment, and recovery scams.

Detective Sergeant Paul Turner emphasized the importance of being cautious when dealing with cryptocurrency ATMs, stating that a key warning sign is when someone you've met online or over the phone asks you to deposit cash into an ATM.

'A significant financial loss can have severe, long-term impacts on victims and their families,' Detective Sergeant Turner said. He urged anyone who believes they've been targeted by a scam to report it immediately and seek advice from trusted friends, family members, or police before proceeding with any transactions.
