Tech Earnings Spark Chip Stock Surge Amid Memory Crunch Woes
Chip stocks enjoyed a significant surge on Thursday after strong tech earnings from Microsoft and Lam Research sparked a widespread rally, driving double-digit gains for semiconductor companies. The market had been in turmoil due to concerns that the spending frenzy was nearing its peak, but Thursday's performance put those worries at bay.
Lam Research shares led the charge with a 20% increase, marking their best day since 1999, as the company posted strong earnings and guidance on artificial intelligence-driven demand. Microsoft also made headlines after signaling robust growth in its Azure business and increasing capital expenditures on strong demand.
The memory stocks saw significant gains as well, with Micron and Sandisk rising by 13% and 21%, respectively, following Samsung's warning that the memory crunch could persist until 2028. This has left investors optimistic about the future of chip stocks, which have been one of the largest beneficiaries of the AI boom.
Arm Holdings also made waves with a 6% gain on strong demand for its first in-house chip, known as AGI CPU, which is expected to reach $2 billion across fiscal 2027 and 2028. The iShares Semiconductor ETF followed suit with an 8% increase.
