Tennessee County Bans Crypto Mining Facilities Amid Regulatory Pressure

Share

The Hawkins County Commission in Tennessee has imposed a blanket ban on cryptocurrency mining facilities and data centers in unincorporated areas. The measure, passed unanimously by all 12 commissioners on July 28, restricts not only the establishment and construction of these facilities but also their installation, expansion, and operation.

This is the second digital asset-related ban imposed by the commission since its dispute with mining company ExoticRidge in 2025. The new measure aims to clarify the scope of the ban and prevent new entrants as well as the expansion of existing businesses.

The conflict between the commission and ExoticRidge has led to litigation, with both sides proposing a settlement in January that would allow construction and operation under certain conditions. However, regulatory pressure is rising on both mining infrastructure and on-site crypto services at the state level.
