Terra's $40 Billion Collapse: How LUNC Survived and Why It Matters

In May 2022, the Terra ecosystem imploded, wiping out approximately $40 billion in market value within days. The crisis began when a large holder withdrew UST liquidity from Curve Finance, causing the stablecoin to dip below its $1 peg.

This triggered a 'death spiral,' where holders converted UST to LUNA to capture arbitrage profits, increasing LUNA's circulating supply and pushing its price down. As more UST holders exited, the cycle accelerated, with both tokens losing all practical value for most holders by May 13.

The Terra blockchain itself had not failed; only the economic model layered on top of it had collapsed. A community vote preserved the original chain as Terra Luna Classic (LUNC), while a new chain called Terra 2.0 launched without the failed stablecoin model.
