Tesla Locks In Arizona Solar and Battery Deal with KKR-Backed Developer
Tesla has signed a power purchase agreement with Stellar Renewable Power to buy electricity from a massive solar and battery storage facility in Navajo County, Arizona. The project pairs a 1 GW solar farm with a 1 GW/4 GWh battery energy storage system, making it one of the largest planned solar-plus-storage installations in the state.
The facility is being developed by Stellar Renewable Power, a platform established by KKR in 2021 to build utility-scale solar and storage assets. Tesla has already deployed Megapack systems at various solar sites throughout Arizona, positioning itself on both the supply and storage sides of the state's energy equation.
Tesla's agreement with Stellar is a key milestone for the project, as it provides a creditworthy buyer to lock in power purchase agreements. This makes it significantly easier for developers like KKR to finance construction. However, the risk side of the equation centers on execution, with potential pitfalls including construction timelines, permitting delays, interconnection queues, and supply chain constraints.
