Tether Bolsters Bitcoin Treasury Amid Sovereign Wealth Fund Push
Tether, the leading stablecoin issuer, has made significant moves to bolster its reserves and gain credibility among institutional investors. The company has rebalanced its Bitcoin holdings after minting $118 billion worth of USDT (USD Tether). This move is part of a broader strategy to build a sovereign wealth fund.
Tether allocates 15% of its realized operating profits to buying BTC, maintaining a treasury that holds between 83,000 and 100,000 BTC. Additionally, the company buys up to 2 tons of gold every week, accumulating over 140 tons of gold valued at $23-24 billion.
These hard-asset positions make up 20-25% of Tether's total reserves, which reached $187.75 billion as of June 30, 2026. The company targets a 10-15% allocation to gold and 10% to Bitcoin in its investment portfolio.
