Tether Confirms $550M USDT Freeze Amid Senate Sanctions Concerns
Tether has confirmed that it helped authorities freeze nearly $550 million of its USDT stablecoin, which was linked to Iran. This move came in response to a Senate report that accused Tether of being used to circumvent sanctions. The company said it had worked with international law enforcement for years and froze more than $130 million across four wallets in 2026, as well as $344 million tied to the Central Bank of Iran in April.
The Senate report found that 84% of crypto wallets sanctioned for links to Iran had transacted exclusively or almost exclusively in USDT. Following the report, Senator Richard Blumenthal urged the Treasury and Justice departments to examine possible sanctions breaches. Tether claimed its cooperation with authorities had led to more than $4.9 billion in assets being frozen worldwide.
Regulatory pressure on Tether may lead to heightened volatility in crypto options and futures markets. Historically, major regulatory actions against stablecoin issuers have triggered swift liquidations and double-digit drops in open interest across major exchanges. Traders are advised to closely monitor the USDT peg and consider hedging risk by shifting margin collateral to USD-denominated alternatives.
