Tether Edges Past Ethereum in Market Value, But Brief Lead Ends
Tether's USDT has briefly surpassed Ethereum in market value for the first time in nearly eight years, but its lead was short-lived. The shift came as investors pulled capital from risk assets and turned to stablecoins like USDT for liquidity.
The data showed that Tether's market cap climbed to around $187.05 billion while Ethereum's slipped to about $186.263 billion, with the gap between the two assets falling below $1 billion. However, Ethereum quickly regained its second-place ranking, with its market cap rising back near $188 billion.
The brief flip has sparked talk of a 'stablecoin season' in 2026, according to analysts who say capital is gravitating towards stability and utility. Mike McGlone, a senior strategist at Bloomberg Intelligence, notes that stablecoins remain attractive as a store of value and settlement asset when conviction fades.
