Tether Expands Infrastructure in Africa Amid High Remittance Costs
Tether, in partnership with financial technology company Shiga, is expanding its infrastructure to support cryptocurrency adoption across Africa and the Gulf region.
The collaboration aims to develop self-custodial products for individual users and financial institutions, allowing them to hold or transfer USDT, BTC, and Tether Gold (XAUT) while maintaining control over their assets.
The services will be powered by Tether's open-source Wallet Development Kit (WDK), providing a unified technical foundation for both consumer wallets and digital asset services aimed at institutional clients.
The project is significant as it targets high-remittance markets in Africa, where the average cost of sending remittances to Sub-Saharan Africa reached 8.46% in 2025, according to World Bank data.
