Tether Expands Regulated Stablecoin USAT to Celo Blockchain
Tether has expanded its US-regulated stablecoin, USAT, to the Celo blockchain, marking its first deployment beyond Ethereum. This move is part of Tether's strategy to build a separate infrastructure for its regulated US stablecoin, distinct from its global flagship stablecoin, USDT.
The expansion allows users to natively mint and burn USAT while paying network gas fees directly in the stablecoin, simplifying the user experience for payments, remittances, and everyday transfers. This feature is particularly beneficial for non-crypto-native users.
USAT was introduced in January as Tether's federally regulated stablecoin for the US market, issued by Anchorage Digital Bank under its national banking charter. Unlike USDT, which primarily serves international users, USAT operates within the regulatory framework established by the GENIUS Act.
The Celo deployment represents more than another blockchain integration; it demonstrates Tether's commitment to building parallel infrastructure for two distinct stablecoin businesses. USDT continues to dominate global crypto markets with a circulating supply approaching $180 billion, while USAT is developing independently within the regulatory framework established for the United States.
