Tether Exposed: 84% of Iranian Crypto Wallets Rely on USDT
A recent analysis of Iran-linked cryptocurrency wallets has revealed that a staggering 84% of them utilize USDT, a stablecoin issued by Tether Limited. This finding raises questions about the potential vulnerability of Tether to regulatory scrutiny in the United States.
The study, which analyzed data from various blockchain and cryptocurrency platforms, found that a significant majority of Iranian cryptocurrency users rely on USDT for their transactions. This reliance is not surprising given the country's strict currency controls and the need for a stable store of value in an environment where traditional fiat currencies are scarce.
The high usage of USDT among Iranian cryptocurrency users has sparked concerns about the potential exposure of Tether to regulatory action in the US. The Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regulation, which is currently under consideration by European lawmakers, could serve as a model for similar regulations in other jurisdictions, including the United States.
