Tether Freezes $550M in Iran-Linked USDT Amid Growing Sanctions Enforcement
Tether has assisted in freezing approximately $550 million in USDT linked to Iran's central bank and sanctions networks. The freezes occurred in two separate waves, with more than $344 million frozen across two addresses in April 2026, later designated by OFAC as tied to the Central Bank of Iran.
A second round of freezing took place in July 2026, when Tether froze over $130 million spread across four separate wallets. This marks one of the stablecoin issuer's largest reported enforcement actions this year.
The company now works with more than 340 law enforcement agencies across 67 countries, a significant expansion of its global cooperation network. Globally, Tether reports it has helped freeze over $4.9 billion in assets, putting the Iran-linked $550 million into perspective as roughly a tenth of everything the company says it has frozen worldwide.
