Tether Gives aUSDT Holders Until September 17 to Redeem for Tether Gold

Tether is winding down its gold-backed stablecoin, aUSDT, and holders have until September 17, 2026 to redeem it for Tether Gold (XAUT). The company announced the wind-down in June, citing low demand and a focus on larger products. However, on-chain data shows that only about 50 million of the 50.02 million outstanding aUSDT tokens have been redeemed so far.

The redemption process involves using the Alloy by Tether platform to return the aUSDT tokens for XAUT. The platform has been inactive since the announcement, and new minting is no longer possible. According to on-chain data, the total supply of aUSDT has not changed significantly since the announcement, suggesting that most holders have yet to redeem their tokens.

The affected holding size is unclear due to discrepancies in market capitalization estimates, ranging from around $1.2 million to over $54 million. However, for individual holders, the key question is whether they are affected and what action they need to take before the deadline.
