Tether Gold Market Cap Surges to $3.3 Billion in Q1 2026
Tether Gold (XAUt), the tokenized gold product from Tether, hit a market cap of $3.3 billion in Q1 2026, marking a 36% increase over the quarter. This surge added roughly $1.1 billion in value since January. By the end of Q1, 707,741 XAUt tokens were in circulation, each backed by one troy ounce of physical gold, totaling 154 tons in reserves. The rise in demand was driven by investors seeking hard assets amid geopolitical tensions and uncertainty over Federal Reserve interest rate decisions.
XAUt now dominates the tokenized gold market, holding over half of the segment's total market cap. Its closest rival, PAX Gold (PAXG) from Paxos, has a market cap of nearly $2.2 billion. Together, XAUt and PAXG make up the majority of the tokenized gold market within the broader digital asset space.
Gold prices saw significant volatility during the quarter, initially climbing above $5,500 per troy ounce before pulling back as rate-cut expectations faded and the US dollar strengthened. Some investors exited positions to secure gains from the earlier rally. At the time of reporting, gold was trading at approximately $4,500 per troy ounce, with XAUt's year-to-date price up 4.37%. Tokenized gold products offer investors exposure to bullion without the hassle of physical storage or logistics, along with 24/7 trading and seamless global transfers.
Both XAUt and PAXG are part of a larger market for tokenized real-world assets (RWA), valued at nearly $31 billion. The growth of these gold-backed tokens highlights sustained demand for blockchain-based exposure to physical commodities.
