Tether Gold Sees 9.5% Holdings Surge Amid Q2 Gold Price Decline
Tether's gold-backed token, XAU₮, saw significant growth in Q2 2026, despite a decline in gold prices. According to Tether's attestation report, holdings of XAU₮ increased by 9.5% during the quarter, with investors buying 53,225 additional tokens. This added 1.66 tonnes of gold to token holders' ownership, reflecting a growing appetite for on-chain, gold-backed assets even during price corrections.
'Q2 offered a clear test of the underlying demand for Tether Gold,' said Paolo Ardoino, CEO of Tether. 'Even as gold experienced its sharpest quarterly correction in 13 years, customers continued to accumulate XAU₮.' This highlights the expanding role tokenized gold can play in the global financial system.
The growth of XAU₮ holdings is notable, especially considering gold prices fell by 14.1% during Q2. By the end of the quarter, XAU₮ tokens represented approximately 22.01 metric tonnes of physical gold, equivalent to 707,747.139 fine troy ounces.
Tether's gold reserves now place it among the world's largest gold purchasers. In fact, if ranked alongside central banks, Tether would position itself third globally during this period, behind Poland and China.
