Tether Overtakes Ethereum, but Briefly
Tether's USDT briefly surpassed Ethereum (ETH) in market value for the first time in nearly eight years, but its reign at second place was short-lived. According to data, Tether's market cap climbed to around $187.05 billion while Ethereum's slipped to about $186.263 billion. This marked a significant moment, with the gap between the two assets falling below $1 billion.
However, this brief flip proved temporary, and Ethereum has since reclaimed its second spot, with its market cap back near $188 billion. The reversal drew attention across the market, where traders have favored defensive positions during weeks of volatility.
Analysts are attributing the shift to investors pulling capital from risk assets and leaning on stablecoins for liquidity. Mike McGlone, a senior strategist at Bloomberg Intelligence, stated that capital is gravitating toward stability and utility, with stablecoins remaining attractive as a store of value and settlement asset when conviction fades.
