Tether Prepares to Bring Native Stablecoins to Bitcoin
Tether is making significant strides in its expansion strategy, with plans to issue USDT natively on Bitcoin through RGB. This move would allow users to hold and transfer both Bitcoin and USDT from the same wallet while using Bitcoin as the underlying commitment layer.
According to Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino, 'Bitcoin deserves a stablecoin that feels truly native, lightweight, private, and scalable.' The infrastructure is designed by RGB, which uses client-side validation and keeps contract data off-chain.
The integration with RGB would remove one technical barrier between the world's largest stablecoin and Bitcoin. However, the economic test comes afterward, if USDT balances begin accumulating through RGB, Lightning channels develop usable stablecoin liquidity, and financial institutions move from discussions to live transactions, Bitcoin would be competing for dollar settlement activity.
