Tether Rebuilds Bitcoin Support for USDT Stablecoin
Tether's USDT stablecoin is returning to Bitcoin infrastructure after nearly two years of building multiple routes for settlement. In a recent post, Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino confirmed that 'USDT on Bitcoin' is coming home.
The company had stopped minting USDT on the Omni Layer in August 2023 and explicitly pointed to RGB as a future Bitcoin-based route. The latest plan is not a first-time launch but rather rebuilding Bitcoin support through newer infrastructure designed for payments and asset issuance.
Tether has been working on integrating USDT with Bitcoin's base layer, Lightning Network payments, and the RGB asset protocol. This strategy aims to combine Bitcoin settlement with faster payments over Lightning. The integration will support remittances, payments, and other dollar-denominated transactions.
