Tether Surpasses 146 Tonnes of Physical Gold Reserves
Tether has significantly expanded its physical gold holdings in the second quarter of this year. The company acquired an additional 14 tonnes of bullion, pushing its total gold reserves to a record 146 tonnes.
This milestone makes Tether one of the world's largest private holders of physical gold outside central banks and governments. The value of these reserves is approximately $18.8 billion.
The increase in gold holdings has been gradual but consistent over the past year, with Tether previously reporting substantial gains in its gold-backed assets during late 2025 and Q1 2026. The company's use of physical gold as a strategic reserve asset for its wider financial operations is attracting attention from financial institutions.
The European Central Bank noted that Tether purchased over 100 tonnes of gold in 2025, describing the scale of its buying as potentially significant for the global financial system if stablecoins continue to expand. This trend also reflects a broader convergence between crypto and traditional markets, with Tether building infrastructure around digital dollars and tokenized commodities.
Tether's growing bullion position represents a notable diversification strategy, providing a different risk profile from cryptocurrencies and other digital assets. The company's investment in Gold.com and its partnership with the precious metals industry also underscore its commitment to expanding access to physical and tokenized gold.
