Tether Surpasses Ethereum in Market Value Amid Crypto Volatility
Tether's (USDT) market value briefly surpassed Ethereum's (ETH) for the first time in nearly eight years, but the momentum was short-lived. Data showed that USDT's market cap climbed to around $187.05 billion while Ethereum's slipped to approximately $186.263 billion, making Tether the second-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization.
The shift is attributed to investors pulling capital from risk assets and favoring stablecoins for liquidity amid volatility in the crypto market. Analysts suggest that this trend may be a precursor to a 'stablecoin season' in 2026.
Ethereum has since reclaimed its second spot, with its market cap back near $188 billion. However, some analysts believe that capital is gravitating towards stability and utility, making stablecoins an attractive store of value and settlement asset when conviction fades.
