Texas Emerges as Hub for AI and Crypto Infrastructure Investment
Galaxy Digital and Mara Holdings have made significant moves in Texas to expand their artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure. The two companies announced plans to develop large-scale data centers for AI, high-performance computing (HPC), and bitcoin mining. Galaxy Digital acquired a 500-acre site in McGregor, Texas, where it will build its second AI and HPC data center campus with an initial power capacity of 74 megawatts.
Mara Holdings, on the other hand, signed a contract to acquire a 1,200-acre site in Matagorda County, which can access up to 2 gigawatts of power. The company plans to develop the site for AI and HPC work as well as bitcoin mining.
The expansion of these companies in Texas is not surprising given the state's favorable conditions for large-scale digital infrastructure investment. Texas offers a large power market, relatively low electricity rates, and land suitable for large developments. The state's independent power grid, ERCOT, also makes it an attractive location for developers seeking access to large power capacity.
The intersection of AI data centers and bitcoin mining infrastructure in the same region has created a competitive landscape where access to land and power is becoming a key variable in business competitiveness.
