Thailand Finalizes Crypto Travel Rule with Strict Compliance Deadline
The Securities and Exchange Commission of Thailand has finalized its crypto Travel Rule, mandating that digital asset service providers verify control of self-custody wallets and retain transaction records for at least five years. The regulation grants regulators immediate access to transaction data during the first two years following each transfer.
According to the official directive, licensed exchanges and custodians must deploy automated systems to collect and transmit baseline identification details alongside each order. This framework aims to align crypto operations with conventional interbank transfer standards.
The regulation requires four core obligations for industry entities: drafting risk management policies, collecting counterparty details, attaching originator and beneficiary records to each transfer, and retaining transaction files for a minimum of five years. Licensed operators will also need to verify that clients maintain effective control over the private keys tied to their external addresses.
Thailand's regulatory timeline parallels similar initiatives across Asia, with South Korea scheduled to roll out its expanded Travel Rule framework in February 2027. Enforcing this rule forms part of a broader regulatory package that includes proposals to permit foreign crypto derivatives and spot exchange-traded products for digital assets.
