Thailand Opens Consultation for Spot Bitcoin and Ethereum ETF Listings
Thailand's Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has opened a public consultation on draft rules that would allow asset managers to list spot Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs directly on the Stock Exchange of Thailand. This move aims to provide regulated, exchange-traded access to crypto for everyday investors, rather than requiring them to use private wallets or offshore brokers.
The proposed framework requires each Thai crypto ETF to be a passive, single-asset fund that tracks either Bitcoin or Ethereum, with a minimum average net exposure of 80% to its underlying coin across each accounting year. This means that the ETFs must remain invested in actual Bitcoin or Ethereum rather than derivatives or cash substitutes.
The SEC has already considered this proposal earlier in 2026 and held a public hearing between April and May, during which most respondents supported the framework but pushed back on custody implementation. The revised draft keeps onshore digital-asset custodians as the default option for holding fund assets, while giving the SEC discretion to approve qualified foreign custodians when necessary.
