The Sandbox Offers Direct Reimbursement After $700K Bridge Exploit

The Sandbox has announced that it will directly reimburse holders of bridged SAND tokens after an exploit on August 21 resulted in the loss of $700,000 worth of assets. The project confirmed that affected users will receive a 1:1 refund using Ethereum-based SAND from its treasury.

According to The Sandbox's post-mortem analysis, the attacker exploited a configuration flaw in SAND's bridge contracts on Base and BNB Chain, allowing them to gain control over message verification and mint unbacked tokens. The compromised bridge activity led to the creation of 339 trillion unbacked SAND on the targeted networks.

However, The Sandbox emphasized that those tokens have been isolated and cannot be bridged or redeemed, reducing the likelihood of a broader token supply shock across all supported networks.
