THORChain Stands Firm Against Selective Censorship in Protocol
THORChain has taken a firm stance against selective censorship in its protocol. The team rejected incorporating mechanisms that would allow blocking individual transactions based on identity or history, opting for a more inclusive and permissionless model.
The debate around selective censorship highlights the importance of distinguishing between halting a chain for solvency reasons and censoring specific operations on subjective grounds. A recent example was the Litecoin pause, where a node operator detected unusual activity and temporarily paused operations for about an hour to verify the situation.
Chad Barraford emphasized that changes to the protocol require consensus from node operators, with no possibility of unilateral control by founders. This approach ensures that the protocol remains open infrastructure, free from discretionary decisions that could be influenced by external pressures or particular interests.
The team's commitment to a permissionless model is rooted in its core value proposition, which allows users to perform swaps without creating an account or providing identity information. This not only preserves user privacy but also prevents the accumulation of sensitive information that can generate additional risks.
