Peter Todd, a renowned Bitcoin developer and contributor to Bitcoin Core, has joined the MARA Foundation as lead maintainer of Slipstream. The private mempool service allows users to send transactions directly to MARA Pool without going through the public peer-to-peer network.

Slipstream gained attention in 2024 for publishing large Ordinals inscriptions and was recently used for research projects like Quantum Safe Bitcoin and Binohash. Todd, who co-authored BIP 125 (replace-by-fee) and created OpenTimestamps, believes that mempool policy should follow market demand rather than restrict how people use Bitcoin.

Todd's appointment comes after hackers exploited Coldcard hardware wallets in July, stealing over $115 million in user funds. The private transactions facilitated by Slipstream can help protect users from exposure of their public keys until confirmation in a block.
