Todd Stands Firm on Self-Custody Despite Coldcard Flaw
A recent hardware wallet vulnerability resulted in approximately $88 million worth of Bitcoin being stolen from users. However, early Bitcoin developer Peter Todd maintains that self-custody remains the strongest protection for long-term Bitcoin holders compared to centralized alternatives.
Todd argues that while a hardware wallet failure represents an isolated technical risk, centralized custody creates broader risks by concentrating control over user funds in a single entity. He points to previous exchange failures such as QuadrigaCX, which resulted in losses exceeding $200 million, as proof that giving private keys to third parties remains a major security risk.
Todd believes the biggest challenge for self-custody is not Bitcoin's technology but human error. He argues that securely managing a recovery phrase requires education and preparation, comparing it to protecting essential documents such as passports or birth certificates.
