Tokenization Booms as SEC Opens Door for On-Chain Trading
Financial markets are undergoing a transformation, according to Bitwise CIO Matt Hougan. He believes tokenization has become impossible to ignore, citing regulatory developments and institutional infrastructure.
Hougan compared tokenization's early stage with the AI boom, using NVIDIA as an example. The company's stock price rose from $16 in 2022 to $219 today, a 176 percent increase. Hougan argued that investors who missed out on DeFi assets should buy more, not regret missing the opportunity.
The SEC created a pathway for tokenized stocks to trade in the United States on September 17, 2026, while S&P Global agreed to acquire OpenZeppelin. This deal brings one of crypto's leading smart-contract security firms inside a major traditional ratings house.
Hougan described tokenization as a multi-year transformation of how financial markets operate. He emphasized that the trend is not just about short-term gains but has significant long-term implications. The combination of regulatory clarity, institutional infrastructure, and rising on-chain activity points to a longer runway for tokenization.
