Tokenization Industry Shifts Towards Convenience Over Rights

The tokenization industry has split into two camps: one that puts registered shares on-chain and another that creates tokens giving economic exposure. Tessera is in the second camp, allowing holders to move their tokens freely. A recent count by RWA.xyz found 4,010,763 addresses holding tokenized stocks, with 1,402,291 of those being bStocks holders, 666,831 being xStocks holders, and 84 being Superstate Opening Bell holders.

The Superstate Opening Bell holders are notable because they are holding the registered shares themselves, not derivatives or new share classes. This is a departure from the rights-first design, which prioritizes verified rights and restricted transfers. In contrast, Tessera's tokens are permissionless and DeFi-composable, settled on Solana.

A closer look at the data reveals that many holders value convenience over rights. The holder numbers are not necessarily a reflection of trading volume, which has actually decreased in recent weeks. However, the data does suggest that retail investors are drawn to tokens that can be easily held and moved.

One unexpected place where tokenized stocks are being used is on the Solana launchpad StonkFun. This platform allows users to buy and sell tokens paired with tokenized stocks, making it easy for investors to get exposure to the market without having to deal with the complexities of traditional stock ownership.

The author of the article, who is an interested party in the development of Tessera, argues that the data suggests that convenience is the primary driver of adoption in the tokenization industry. They point to the fact that many holders are small-position investors who value the ability to move their tokens at any time.
