Tokenized RWAs Surge Past $7 Billion as Crypto Market Stalls
The cryptocurrency market has faced significant challenges in recent years, driven by inflation, interest rate hikes, and macroeconomic factors. As a result, many top cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Ethereum have struggled to maintain their value. However, one sector of the crypto market is bucking this trend: tokenized real-world assets (RWAs). According to CoinShares, deposits of RWAs on blockchains more than tripled year-over-year to $7.4 billion in the second quarter of 2026.
Tokenized RWAs are physical or traditional financial assets that are digitized into tokens on a blockchain. This allows for faster and cheaper trading, as well as increased liquidity. Tokenized stocks and bonds can be traded 24/7 at speeds faster than traditional brokerages and banks. Tokenized commodities such as gold and silver can be traded with instant liquidity and no physical storage issues.
The growth of tokenized RWAs is being driven by financial utility, not market cycles, according to CoinShares CEO Jean-Marie Mognetti. This means that the demand for these assets is coming from practical use cases rather than speculation. Tokenized Treasuries, stablecoins, and gold have been driving most of the RWA market's growth spurt over the past year.
Investors can profit from this trend by investing in stablecoin issuers such as Circle, or tokenized commodities like PAX Gold. They can also invest in financial companies that are expanding into the nascent market, such as BlackRock and JPMorgan Chase. However, it's worth noting that the Motley Fool Stock Advisor analyst team did not recommend buying stock in Robinhood Markets.
