Tom Lee Predicts Small-Cap Surge, Hinting at Altcoin Season
Tom Lee, chairman of Bitmine Immersion Technologies, which holds 4.9% of the world's Ethereum supply (over 6 million ETH), has expressed bullish sentiment on traditional U.S. small-cap stocks. Lee believes the Russell 2000 index is significantly undervalued and has become a "coiled spring" in October 2026, suggesting a potential rebound. Historically, a turnaround in small businesses has served as a leading indicator for rallies in low-cap crypto assets, making Lee's outlook relevant for the crypto industry as well.
The shift in focus at Fundstrat was prompted by JPMorgan Equity Strategy data showing a historic anomaly: short positions against Russell 2000 companies had surged to the 99.8th percentile, with median short interest exceeding 8% of shares outstanding. This extreme bearish sentiment points to an inevitable short squeeze, which could drive prices sharply higher. For the crypto industry, particularly where Lee's company is the largest institutional staker of Ether, this move signals preparation for a global shift in liquidity.
Fundstrat forecasts that softer U.S. labor market data will ease hawkish pressure from the Federal Reserve, leading to a fall in the 10-year Treasury yield below 5%. Lower Treasury yields are expected to restart risk-on mode, freeing up liquidity that will first flow into Russell 2000 stocks, then into low-cap crypto assets and undervalued altcoins. Despite localized pressure from the U.S. midterm elections, Fundstrat maintains its annual S&P 500 target of 8,200-8,400 points, citing strong business fundamentals and third-quarter earnings per share growth approaching 30%.
Lee's strategic bet on the Russell 2000 indicates that while Ethereum and other major digital assets are in a prolonged consolidation phase, smart money is seeking the highest returns at the bottom of the traditional market. This sets the stage for a near-term "altcoin season," as freed-up liquidity could revitalize undervalued altcoins that have suffered from a lack of attention in recent months.
