Top VCs' Project Shutdowns Reach Alarming Levels
Recent discussions about project shutdowns have centered on investments made by top venture capital firms. According to RootData's investment and financing data, five institutions, Coinbase Ventures, YZi Labs, Pantera Capital, a16z, and Paradigm, cover a total of 993 independent projects, with 216 marked as shut down, accounting for a cumulative ratio of 21.75%.
Looking at the individual institutions, Pantera has a shutdown rate of 24.76%, while Coinbase Ventures' is at 22.69%. a16z's rate is slightly lower at 20.09%, but it's not the institution with the highest shutdown rate in the sample. YZi Labs has a rate of 13.56%.
Among a16z's lead investment projects, 29 are marked as shut down, accounting for 19.59%. This includes Linera and Universal, which have recently announced their closure and entry into shutdown processes, respectively. The data indicates that even top institutions cannot eliminate operational risks for projects.
