Toyota Issues First Security-Token Bond on Blockchain Network Through Toyota Wallet App
Toyota has launched its first security-token bond on a blockchain network, allowing customers to invest in the company's finance arm through its Toyota Wallet app.
The TOYOTA Wallet Tsumugu Bond is a one-year security token issued by Toyota Finance through BOOSTRY's ibet for Fin blockchain platform. With a total size of about $6.26 million, the bond can be purchased in units of around $626, with a minimum investment required to buy the bond.
The key limitation of this bond is that it comes with transfer restrictions, meaning investors cannot freely trade or move the asset outside of the defined legal and operational structure. This is not surprising given that Toyota's announcement offers no suggestion that holders will be able to trade it around the clock or move it through ordinary crypto wallets.
The blockchain record does not remove the familiar questions around a bond, such as the issuer's creditworthiness, the return offered, repayment at maturity, and the terms for selling or transferring the position. However, security tokens can give issuers a digital record of ownership and a more direct way to manage investor communications.
In this case, Toyota is using blockchain technology inside the existing rules of a bond market, which may limit the flexibility that crypto traders look for but also avoids the need to build a public trading market around a retail bond issue. The transfer restriction defines the trade-off, and investors should view the token as a digitally issued bond held within a regulated framework rather than an asset with the mobility of Bitcoin or an ERC-20 token.
