Traders Shift $103B to Crypto Exchanges Amid 24/7 Market Demand
In April 2026, traders routed over $103 billion in traditional asset volume through crypto exchanges amid escalating US-Iran tensions. The surge, driven by the need for 24/7 market access, saw Binance handle $60.6 billion of the volume, with a record single-day high of $12.6 billion on April 7. Nic Roberts-Huntley, CEO of Blueprint Finance, highlighted the growing role of digital assets in traditional finance, noting how they can help hedge risk during weekends when traditional markets are closed.
The conflict disrupted the Strait of Hormuz, causing Brent crude to rise over 60% in a month. CME Group, which has set the oil benchmark for decades, attempted to introduce a 10-barrel WTI crude future contract with 24/7 trading but faced regulatory hurdles. The CFTC stayed the listing, citing the need to review whether 24/7 trading aligns with its statutory principles. Meanwhile, crypto exchanges like Binance and Hyperliquid processed significant volumes of traditional-finance perpetual contracts, filling the gap left by traditional markets.
Experts noted that the convergence of traditional finance and digital assets is accelerating. Christine Lagarde, President of the European Central Bank, emphasized how distributed ledgers streamline issuance, trading, settlement, and custody into a continuous environment. However, the regulatory landscape remains a key challenge, with the CFTC's review highlighting the hurdles facing 24/7 futures trading. Despite this, the demand for continuous market access persists, driven by geopolitical uncertainty and the need for commodity hedging.
