Traditional Finance Meets Crypto: Major Players Converge on Stablecoins
Wall Street and cryptocurrency are converging on several key fronts, with major players taking steps to integrate traditional finance with digital assets.
Binance is deepening its relationship with Circle by investing $100 million in the stablecoin issuer and signing a five-year agreement to expand USDC adoption across its exchange. The deal includes a commercial arrangement that links Binance's incentive fees to the amount of USDC held through its Modular Smart Contract Wallet infrastructure.
Meanwhile, Canada's six largest banks are testing tokenized Canadian dollar deposits as a way to improve settlement speed and payment programmability. This pilot effort aligns with guidance from Canada's Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions that tokenized deposits remain legally tied to traditional deposits.
The growth in cross-border stablecoin flows continues, despite declining overall crypto market capitalization. According to Chainalysis data, cross-border stablecoin flows rose nearly 78% to $220.3 billion over the year through June, driven by transfers averaging about $3,000 and characterized as business use rather than speculative activity.
