Treasury Cash Balance Nears $1 Trillion as Repo Market Talks Heat Up
The US Treasury's cash balance is nearing $1 trillion, but its potential impact on Bitcoin remains uncertain. At a New York Fed conference on Sept. 22, Treasury officials and market participants discussed whether the government should lend excess cash into the overnight repo market, which finances Treasury trades.
Such a move could raise bank reserves, potentially benefiting risk-taking. However, any benefit for Bitcoin would be indirect, as higher bank reserves do not by themselves establish cheaper funding or fresh demand for the cryptocurrency.
According to Reuters, several private-sector panelists welcomed the idea of lending excess cash into the repo market. The Treasury Borrowing Advisory Committee had considered it in May and urged further study.
The committee modeled what would happen if Treasury lent some of its cash overnight against Treasury securities. Money would leave the Treasury General Account, while bank reserves would rise. Treasury would earn a repo rate, but the economic result depends on the repo rate compared with the rate the Fed pays on reserves.
