Treasury's Bond Market Move Triggers Bitcoin and Gold Surge
The price of Bitcoin and gold surged in recent days due to a combination of events that affected the bond market, Washington politics, and investor sentiment.
In late June, both assets were trading at multi-month lows. However, on Wednesday, the Treasury Department announced plans to significantly increase its buybacks of long-term Treasurys, which sparked a sell-off in the US dollar and sent gold prices up over 2%. Bitcoin also saw significant gains, rising above $77,000 after being stuck between $62,000 and $67,000 for weeks.
The Treasury's actions were aimed at calming bond markets, but they had an unintended consequence: raising questions about the government's attempt to lower long-term borrowing costs despite inflationary pressures. This move could potentially handcuff the Federal Reserve in its fight against inflation.
Investors seemed to be fleeing the US dollar and Treasurys for alternative assets like gold and Bitcoin, leading to a 'debasement trade.' The cryptocurrency's price increase was also boosted by forced purchases from investors who had shorted Bitcoin, adding fuel to the rally. By Friday, over $4 billion in bearish crypto positions had been liquidated.
