Trump Administration Considers Expanding US Bitcoin Holdings

US President Donald Trump confirmed that his administration has discussed expanding its Bitcoin holdings but no decision has been made.

Trump stated this during a recent White House event attended by technology executives, cryptocurrency industry leaders, and federal regulators. The discussion centered around accumulating more Bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies, but the president emphasized that no government purchase decision or timetable exists yet.

The existing Strategic Bitcoin Reserve holds assets primarily obtained through completed federal forfeiture proceedings cases. The reserve was established by Trump's March 6, 2025 executive order.

Treasury and Commerce may develop budget-neutral strategies for acquiring additional Bitcoin without imposing incremental costs on US taxpayers. However, expanding the non-Bitcoin stockpile would require a separate policy decision and potentially congressional approval.
