Trump Administration Eyes Global Stablecoin Push
The Trump administration is exploring a plan to promote the use of dollar-backed stablecoins globally, in an effort to cement the US dollar's status as the premier global reserve currency.
According to Bloomberg, the plan involves joint ventures with private players to encourage the adoption of stablecoins overseas, which would boost demand for US Treasury notes and strengthen the dollar's dominance.
The Treasury and State Departments could play key roles in promoting US dollar stablecoins globally, alongside the US International Development Finance Corporation. Stablecoins are blockchain-based digital tokens whose values are pegged to an external reference, such as the US dollar.
USDT and USDC, the world's top two stablecoins, account for almost 90% of the total stablecoin market value of $292.49 billion. Investor confidence in stablecoins is tied to the issuer's ability to redeem them for fiat currency at any time, with issuers holding actual US dollars at a 1:1 ratio and safe investments like US government debt.
The plan has raised concerns about risks to emerging economies with current-account deficits that are vulnerable to capital outflows. Dollar-backed stablecoins could accelerate capital flight from these countries in times of stress, as they enable money to move over blockchains, bypassing traditional banking channels.
