Trump Agrees to Ethics Rules for Crypto Bill, But Will It Be Enough?
President Donald Trump has agreed to new ethics rules as part of a sweeping cryptocurrency bill being written in the Senate. The bill, aimed at bringing the $2.3 trillion digital assets industry into the mainstream, requires all federally elected officials and their spouses, including the president and his wife, to refrain from issuing meme coins. This concession comes after weeks of negotiations between Trump's team and senators.
The crypto bill also includes a provision that would require the president to put his cryptocurrency holdings in a blind trust and divest when those holdings reach a certain value. Additionally, state attorneys general would be granted the power to enforce the law in addition to the Justice Department, addressing concerns from Democrats about trusting Trump-appointed officials.
The bill's fate now hangs on Tuesday's pivotal Senate vote. If passed, it would cement crypto legitimacy into law, but industry leaders are warning that a failure could lead to more campaign cash being poured into midterm elections.
