Trump-Backed Crypto Bill Hits Roadblock in Senate Over Ethics Concerns

Share

A long-awaited crypto regulatory package backed by President Donald Trump has hit a roadblock in the Senate. The Clarity Act, which aimed to bring cryptocurrency under federal financial regulations, failed to clear a key procedural hurdle on Tuesday.

The bill's failure was a result of united opposition from both Democrats and Republicans, with some lawmakers expressing concerns over ethics language and foreign money laundering provisions. Sen. Cynthia Lummis, the primary architect of the bill, stated that she believes the Clarity Act is 'over' after working on it for over a year and giving in to more than 120 requests.

The package was also criticized by Democrats, who argued that it would allow President Trump's rapidly growing crypto empire to continue unchecked. Sen. Cory Booker said of his vote against the bill, 'it allows the corruption of the president to continue.' The issue with the ethics language was a major point of contention, as many lawmakers were not satisfied with its strength.

Sen. John Cornyn, however, expressed that he would have voted for the bill if it had been tweaked further to address his concerns about deposit yields and guardrails on the currency being diverted for criminal purposes.
