Trump-Backed Crypto Bill Suffers Crushing Defeat in Senate
A key piece of legislation championed by President Trump and the crypto industry has suffered a stinging defeat in the U.S. Senate, raising doubts about its future.
The Digital Asset Market Clarity Act, also known as the Clarity Act, would have established regulations for the crypto sector, which has grown beyond Bitcoin to include meme coins and other cryptocurrencies.
The bill's failure to clear a key procedural hurdle means it will be difficult for it to pass in its current form. Democrats opposed the bill due to concerns about an ethics clause that they felt did not go far enough to prevent conflicts of interest.
Critics also argued that handing control over to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission would have given the industry too much leniency without sufficient safeguards.
