Trump-Backed Crypto Scams Spread via Fake AI Videos
Fake AI-generated videos featuring President Donald Trump have been used to promote cryptocurrency scams. According to Ohio-based law firm Meyer, Wilson and Werning, a fake video of Trump appeared in unauthorized streams during the Super Bowl earlier this year.
The video directed viewers to Trump2026.org, where they were promised doubling investments in cryptocurrency. However, the website was not affiliated with Trump or the federal government.
Attorney David Meyer stated that an investor had a brokerage wire $500,000 to the site before contacting his firm and warning them about the potential scam.
The claims come amid warnings from AI developers and researchers that generative AI can make fake videos easier to create and use in scams. Sam Altman, co-founder and CEO of OpenAI, expressed concern during a July 22, 2025, fireside chat that 'we have a significant impending fraud crisis because of this.'
The FBI has also warned about the use of AI in scams, describing how generative AI can create believable text, fictitious social media profiles, and faster scam messages.
