Trump-Backed Token Offering in Maldives Deferred Amid Regional Turmoil
World Liberty Financial, backed by the Trump family, has delayed its plan to launch a digital token tied to a Trump-branded resort in the Maldives. The token was supposed to give investors a share of revenue from loans financing the resort's development, but the Iran war has disrupted regional travel patterns, making it harder for the project to meet its revenue assumptions.
The company had partnered with Securitize, a leading real-world asset tokenization platform, in February to structure the offering. The plan was to convert loan interests into digital tokens that could be traded onchain, allowing investors to gain fractional exposure to the luxury hospitality asset.
Industry analysts note that this delay is not an isolated case, with multiple blockchain-based real estate ventures facing similar headwinds when geopolitical or economic conditions deteriorate. Tokenized assets tied to physical infrastructure, hospitality, and tourism are particularly vulnerable because their revenue streams cannot be decoupled from on-the-ground realities.
