Trump Considers Former SEC Chairman for AI Czar Role Amid Ripple Lawsuit Concerns
Former SEC chairman Jay Clayton, who led the agency in its lawsuit against Ripple in 2020, is being considered for a role as White House AI czar by President Trump.
Clayton has been serving as Director of National Intelligence, overseeing the 18-agency intelligence community, since his confirmation in July.
Trump has expressed support for Clayton's potential appointment, calling him 'a good man' and stating that having him take the role 'is a good idea.'
Clayton's regulatory legacy, particularly his handling of the Ripple lawsuit, has raised concerns among the crypto community. The lawsuit, which alleged Ripple raised $1.3 billion through unregistered securities sales, resulted in a $125 million penalty and a permanent injunction restricting how Ripple sells XRP to US institutions.
The case, which closed in August 2025, had significant implications for the XRP market, leading to a two-and-a-half-year delisting from major exchanges and delaying XRP's path to spot ETFs until November 2025.
