Trump Family Bank Venture Draws Scrutiny Over UAE-Backed Investment
World Liberty Financial's bid to enter the banking sector has hit a snag due to a 49% stake acquired by UAE-backed investors. The investment, led by Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed al Nahyan and co-investors, has raised concerns about potential conflicts of interest tied to the Trump family's financial ventures.
The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) had given preliminary approval for World Liberty Trust Company, National Association to become a national trust bank. However, this decision is now being scrutinized by Senate and House Democrats who are pushing for investigations and hearings into the UAE-backed investment.
World Liberty Financial's USD1 stablecoin has reached a market capitalization of $4 billion, ranking it as the fourth-largest stablecoin after Tether and USDC. The company aims to use its banking license to offer services such as stablecoin issuance, redemption, on-ramp and off-ramp services, custody, and conversion.
The Trump family's involvement in World Liberty Financial has drawn criticism from Democrats who claim that the investment raises concerns about potential conflicts of interest. White House Principal Deputy Press Secretary Anna Kelly rejected these concerns, stating that President Donald Trump acts only in the best interests of the American public.
