Trump Family Profits Soar as President Tackles Cryptocurrency Regulation
President Donald Trump is involved in drafting regulations for cryptocurrencies while his family has profited significantly from the industry. The president's financial disclosures show he made nearly $1.5 billion from cryptocurrency last year, including $635 million from his Trump Meme Coin, which dropped 80% in value over the year.
The connection between the president's involvement in regulating cryptocurrencies and his family's profits has raised concerns about potential conflicts of interest. Former White House ethics lawyer Richard Painter said while the president's actions are not illegal, they are a 'serious financial conflict of interest' for him to supervise regulators while holding substantial investments in the industry.
A Reuters/Ipsos poll found that nearly two-thirds of Americans believe it is inappropriate for the president and his family to profit from cryptocurrency while he is in office, including three out of every ten Republicans.
