Trump Meets with Crypto Leaders, Urges Congress to Pass Clarity Act
President Donald Trump met with top cryptocurrency leaders at the White House on Wednesday to discuss the Clarity Act, a bipartisan bill aimed at providing clearer rules and regulations for the industry. The meeting was seen as an opportunity for Trump to push Congress to advance the legislation, which has been stuck in the Senate.
The Clarity Act would require illicit finance protections and place cryptocurrency markets under the oversight of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) and give disclosure oversight to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). According to Kristin Smith, president of the Solana Policy Institute, the bill would also require new cryptocurrencies to file disclosures with the SEC, similar to equities.
The meeting was followed by a surge in Bitcoin prices, which rose above $70,000 for the first time since June. Smith attributed this reaction to the positive signals sent by Trump's meeting with cryptocurrency leaders and his commitment to making the US a leader in the industry.
However, Democrats have raised concerns about the president's family profiting from crypto and are seeking a prohibition on the issuance and sponsorship of digital assets for federal officials, including the president and members of Congress.
