Trump Names National Intelligence Chief to Lead AI Task Force
US President Donald Trump has confirmed national intelligence chief Jay Clayton as the head of a new White House task force on artificial intelligence. Clayton will lead the Super Intelligence Force, which Trump prefers to call, to ensure the US continues to lead the world in AI development. The force will also protect American interests and improve the lives of all citizens, according to Trump.
Clayton has no background in the tech industry, but has a background as a Wall Street lawyer, having represented Goldman Sachs during the 2008 financial crisis. He also chairs the Securities and Exchange Commission, where he took a largely pro-business stance and brought enforcement cases against the nascent crypto industry.
AI researchers have warned of the technology's potential dangers, citing cases of AI systems going rogue and hacking outside systems. Trump has resisted tighter AI regulation, arguing that a slowdown could give Chinese firms an advantage and that federal law enforcement can deal with bad actors misusing the technology.
