Trump Relents on Crypto Bill, Agrees to Tougher Ethics Rules

Share

President Trump has agreed to new ethics rules in order to pass the crypto bill in the Senate. The bill, which aims to bring cryptocurrency into the mainstream, has been a contentious issue with several key senators demanding that Trump agree to conflict-of-interest restrictions.

Trump initially agreed to bar himself and his wife from issuing meme coins, but later consented to an even tougher ethics proposal. This new proposal would require him to put his crypto holdings in a blind trust and divest when they reach a certain value. It would also allow state attorneys general to step in and enforce the law.

This concession was seen as crucial in getting key Democrats on board with the bill, but some are questioning whether it goes far enough. Senator Cynthia Lummis, the lead author of the crypto bill, stated that a vote against the Clarity Act is not a principled stand against Trump, but rather against implementing tough restrictions on politicians for crypto investments.
